Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked at Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten years old. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used before she reached the age of eight. It means very fragile in Arabic. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was on the high school basketball squad. She sang the song Home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the founding members of the form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
